Have you heard of Jane Elizabeth Kotze?

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Jane Elizabeth Kotze is a third year fashion design student at the Elizabeth Galloway Academy of Fashion in Cape Town, South Africa. This collection, Jane's final contribution to her fashion design education is dare we say, inspired, beautiful and well beyond what one would expect from a grad student.

Taking old tablecloths and doilies from her grandmother and mother (who never throw anything out) and combining it with vintage fabrications from second-hand store, Greensleeves, Jane tells a tale of modern nostalgia and the optimism of childhood.

By using reclaimed fabrics there is a unique quality to her collection, a quirky tone and it speaks volumes about the designer's tactile nature and the design process. I imagine the challenges presented by working with the fabric she had, mixing it together and making it work was a great preparatory step for a new designer.

We know we are not stepping out on a tight rope by saying this, but Jane is definitely one to watch. We expect to see and hear much much much more from this wildly talented young lass!

Trending: #70's vibes!

Monday, January 17, 2011

Prints, shorts... A hint of elegance always looks good. High waists. The patterns, very YSL. Spring classics and rebelliousness get the hands shake. The 70's were an era of more than just fab music, the clothes were divine & inspired. Goreous prints, romantic cuts, flowing dresses! What's not to love?

That 70's Style!

Few decades produced as much polarizing fashion as the '70s, but it's all love and positive vibrations this spring, with a resurgence of gypsy florals, denim bells and platform shoes. After the political upheaval of the 1960s, the 1970s were a decade of hedonism. Rather than wanting to change the world, people just wanted to go out and have fun. Much of '70s fashion was still influenced by the hippie movement, though the focus of spirituality shifted inward, with people finding themselves through things such as astrology, crystal healing, indigenous traditions, and even, yes, mood rings.

Big hats, scarves and bellbottoms from Biba

The '70s was also a decade marked by excess, and several icons of the 1960s—Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Mama Cass—died as a result of overindulgent lifestyles. Bette Midler's iconic 1979 film The Rose, about a self-destructive female singer, was loosely modeled after Joplin and was also, incidentally, filled to the brim with '70s gypsy fashion. Ironically, while pants veered to hot shorts and tops to the tube and crop variety, the '70s was all about the one-piece swimsuit, which also doubled as a body-suit when worn with high-waisted trousers.

One of the most iconic idols to emerge from the '70s was Stevie Nicks, the bewitching Fleetwood Mac singer who layered velvet, crystals, scarves, feathers and top-hats over peasant skirts, tight tanks and sky-high platforms.

We'll skip over the atrocity that was disco, and end the decade at night spots like Max's Kansas City and Studio 54; both drew hordes of the rich and beautiful. Bianca Jagger, Mick's wife and a favorite of Andy Warhol, was the reigning queen of Studio 54, where she celebrated her 32nd birthday riding in on a white horse—lead by naked men. Now if that's not enough reason to celebrate the '70s, then what is?
