THE HUMANS // 2014 IN REVIEW

Monday, December 29, 2014

Oh gosh no! It's another 2014 round-up post!

You'll just have to avert your eyes of you're not that interested. To be honest, I write a round-up post every year. I write it because it gives me a chance to sit and examine the year I've had, the mistakes I've made, the victories and the moments of joy. This post isn't just a round-up of the year we've had, it's also my way of taking stock, saying thanks and documenting our milestones as a family.

10 THINGS I LEARNED WHILE TRAVELING

Thursday, November 13, 2014

Most people reach a point in their lives where they abandon life in their home town in favour of exploring the world. They quit their jobs, move somewhere new and experience life with a new perspective. I’ve done this twice. First I went to Asia, and then a few years later I went to Europe. Each time I had a different reason for leaving, those reasons aren’t important now. But the lessons I learned while abroad have shaped the person I am today.

1] WE ARE ALL THE SAME, NO MATTER WHAT LANGUAGE WE SPEAK, FOOD WE EAT OR PLACE WE LIVE
When you’re young and you travel abroad for the first time, you expect to be overwhelmed by new and exciting things. You expect people to be cooler, more interesting, more diverse, and more tolerant. They aren’t. People are the same all over the world. They care about the same things we do. The nicest people I have ever met have been South African. The most patriotic South African’s live abroad though.

2] CRIME IS EVERYWHERE
In South Africa we tend to polarise our crime stats. As if they only happen to us. The truth is, there is crime everywhere. The same precautions I would take when going out in Long Street, I would take when going out in London, Tokyo and New York.

3] I DON’T NEED TO OWN THINGS
When I lived abroad, it always felt temporary. My home never felt like my forever home. A couch was never something I owned, it was always something I had, purely because I needed somewhere to sit. This sort of mind set is liberating. When I came home and spent time with friends that hadn’t travelled I was taken aback by all the stuff they had. All the things they owned or were still paying for. It seemed so unnecessary. Now I see it differently, my possessions aren’t an extension of myself, they are merely life’s accessories, things I have to make my life easier. Is this how I know I am a grown up?

20 THINGS ABOUT ME

Saturday, October 25, 2014

ONE//
I'm terrified of butterflies, moths and lizards. When I say terrified, I mean freak-out-and-scream terrified. If there's a lizard in my bedroom I sleep on the couch.

TWO//
When I was young and silly I had THE BIGGEST crush on Regan. This was like 10 years ago. It was so ridiculous! If you'd told me then that in just 10 years we'd be happily together with a child I probably would have passed out with happiness.

THREE//
I have a serious nail polish addiction. I used to only wear Essie but I've since come to love the AVON gel finish polishes.

FOUR//
There is nothing in this world more important to me than my family. I love them fiercely.

FIVE//
If there's one thing I am desperate to achieve before the end of this year it's to stop smoking. Every cigarette I smoke makes me feel gross and unhealthy and I just want to quit. I don't want Sophie growing up with parents that smoke. I mean she already says smokes!

WHEN YOU JUST KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG

Thursday, October 23, 2014

I think every parent lives with the fear that one day something will happen to their child. I go to work and it’s always in the back of my mind. Is Sophie ok? Has she hurt herself? Did I remember to tell my mom to keep the kitchen door closed? Is her car seat safe enough? It’s always there. Those thoughts. That lingering parenting stress.

Two weeks ago I got a call from my mom. It was midday, I had just come out of a meeting. It’s important that you know my mom never calls. I knew there was something wrong with Sophie. Before I even answered the phone I just knew. My mom told me that she’d just changed Sophie’s nappy and that it was filled with blood. I can’t even describe the terror I held in my heart. Was it really that much blood? Was my mom exaggerating? She had to be… Sophie seemed fine when I left for work that morning. She seemed ok. Not sick. So why?

I called Regan immediately after talking to my mom and we rushed home to take Sophie to the hospital.

Sophie looked pale and a little sleepy when we got home. She was happy, playful, chatting and walking around. When I saw the nappy my mom had changed I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t understand how she could have passed this much blood and still be ok?

MINIMAL ME PART ONE // THE WARDROBE INVENTORY: SS14/15

Sunday, September 21, 2014

It’s been some time since I wrote about my introduction to minimalism. While I have not abandoned the idea, I've not had time to take more steps towards simplifying my wardrobe. This weekend I vowed to find the time to do a wardrobe detox, and take stock of what I have, what I need and what I want.

I want the focus of this post to be around detoxing your wardrobe though (we’ll get to the needs and wants later). As some of you may know, I am completely obsessed with into-mind.com. So naturally I used this guide to assist me with my wardrobe detox.

It was a lot simpler than I expected:

LIFE LATELY ACCORDING TO MY IPHONE // #007

ROW 1

one // I do so love my new work notebook from Typo
two // Sophie is so mobile, she is always running off in any and every direction at any given moment
three // I wore make-up to work everyday for one whole week! If you know me, you'll know why that's noteworthy. It really was not as time consuming as I often make it out to be...

ROW 2

four // numbers can be numbing -- but in the best way. This is my favorite relaxation tool
five // look at those lips!
six // the only upside to being too busy to be a home maker is chinese take-out! Monks does it best.

ROW 3

seven // the weather has been so divine since the 1st of September, Sophie even got to wear her first summer dress of the season!
eight // playing on the slide in Constantia Village
nine // daddy & daughter time on the couch, sharing chips & watching F1

THIS IS WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE WHEN DOVES CRY (AND BY DOVES I DO MEAN MOMS OF TODDLERS)

Tuesday, September 09, 2014

Listen up, I am about to lay some truth on you and you may not be ready for it… babies are super easy. I now accept this as a fact. You may be a new mom with a new baby reading this, thinking I am clueless/insane because babies are difficult. I am not. They are not. I assure you. Do you want to know where my motherly wisdom stems from? It stems from the sweet, innocent, angel baby I had, morphing into a stubborn, smacking, spitting, shouting, hair pulling, tantrum throwing toddler.

Wow.

To say that I am unprepared for this stage of Sophie’s development would be a superb understatement.

FRIDAY FINDS #007: LITTLE THINGS

Friday, August 15, 2014

Wooden toys and furnishings will always feel like treasures to me. They remind me of my childhood. My sisters and I grew up surrounded by wooden toys and trinkets. I never had a Fischer Price oven, I had a wooden one. My first Lego's weren't Lego's at all, they were wooden blocks. The durability of a wooden toy or piece of furniture makes it feel timeless.

I'm always on the hunt for these little treasures for Sophie. I have such grandiose ideas of them becoming family heirlooms, and lasting for centuries. So obviously I get very excited when I stumble on to a new place to procure these treasures.

UGLY CRYING ON PUBLIC TRANSPORT / A WEEK OF BLEH

Thursday, August 14, 2014

In case you also need to beat the stress monsters to death

There was a young woman sitting opposite me on the train home today. She had what looked to be a 7-9 month old baby cuddled in her lap. Just as the train started to make it’s way out of the station, her baby began to cry. She whipped out her boob and started to breastfeed her baby. I was watching her intently. I had had a rough week at work and something about bearing witness to this simple act of mothering made me feel calm.

Until it didn’t.

It’s like that Lily Allen music video; you see things as you hope they are, not as they truly are. The longer I sat and watched that young woman, the sadder I felt. She was dressed in worn clothes, her baby was wrapped in a towel and not a blanket, her one shoe was so worn down in the front that I could see her sock. She was not well off. I noticed people watching her with that look of disapproval that always accompanies public breastfeeding. I could see her face, she was shy and apologetic, perhaps even embarrassed.

14 DAYS OF 14 FAVS #BEAUTY

Monday, August 04, 2014

I’m at that age where you stop experimenting with brands, I know what I like, I know what works for me and I don’t really bother with the rest. The downside about this phase is that I have limited what I expose myself to, so when wonderful new products come on the market, I seldom know about them.

So, here we are. I’m going to take one day a week for the next 14 weeks to share the products I love with you. Could I challenge you to do the same on your blog? Or maybe just comment and tell me about the products you love?

I’m starting off with beauty:

LIFE LATELY ACCORDING TO MY IPHONE #007

Monday, July 28, 2014

1) weekend sleepovers with my darling niece are the best. The fact that Regan gets to test drive being a parent of two is just an added bonus.

2) a typical day: grande cappuccino + too many cups of office coffee + not enough water = splitting headache by 3pm. Any tips on how to drink less coffee would be most appreciated.

3) speaking of coffee... Don't freak out yet, the cup was well and truly empty.

4) online shopping on Superbalist to get Regan the coolest pair of man boots ever!

5) we used to pass these coin operated rides and say "one day Soph will want to ride that" well one day has finally arrived. No trip to the shops is complete without Sophie flexing her bus driver muscles.

6) I've lost 7kg's in the past 6 weeks! This is the first selfie I've taken in over a year that included my thighs. *airpunch*

7) lunch time strolls around the CBD reveal many hidden architectural gems, like this one in lower Longmarket street.

8) Sophie has the best sense of humor. How awesome is it when your child's personality begins to reveal itself? She has us in stitches most days.

9) our lemon tree is dropping with the weight of unpicked lemons. I used this one for a very tasty roast chicken with rosemary.

THE ONLY BEGINNERS RUNNING PLAN YOU'LL EVER NEED

Monday, July 14, 2014

I have this lofty goal of doing the Greenpoint Park Run on the 27th of September. Its only lofty because my fitness level is best described as sedentary. Let’s just say I’ve been at that level for quite some time. Since turning 30 I have become much more aware (read:ashamed) of my inactive lifestyle and making positive changes has been on the cards for quite some time.

Sure, I’ve had my excuses like my boobs are too big for my sports, I need a new sports bra, I can’t find a good sports bra, my sneakers are ugly, my sneakers are uncomfortable, my sneakers are not meant for running, I have blisters from my sneakers…. You don’t even know how far my excuses went. Anyway, I’ve since bought an awesome sports bra – goodbye boob jiggle – and also really great running shoes. So I’ve no more excuses!

But how do you even run????

THE LAZY MOMS GUIDE TO NO FUSS CHOCOLATE CAKE

Thursday, July 03, 2014

Winter is a time to stuff your face.
Ok, not really, but winter is the one time of the year where I truly enjoy food. I bake, roast, slow cook the shit out of the season. It's cold outside and our human bodies have a natural urge to fatten up. I saw this chocolate cake recipe in the June Fresh Living magazine and had to try it out.

Its moist, dense, rich, gooey, basically it checks all my boxes on my chocolate cake approval card. The best part is that its incredibly easy to make. I'm a novice baker, so me saying its easy means ITS REALLY FREAKING EASY!

Keep reading for the recipe.

HELLO?! IS ANYBODY THERE?

Tuesday, June 24, 2014

I've fallen down a rabbit of poor time management and as a result my blog has taken a bit of a backseat to my real life this month. There might be one or two of you that have wondered where I was...

At the beginning of June I started a freelance job at Woolworths. It's been a total dream getting back to working it. You guys I'm so lucky because I also get to work with a pretty awesome group of ladies who are so chatty and interesting. I've been there such a short time but I feel so welcomed and comfortable. How great is it to have lovely colleagues? So great!

YOUR BLOG IS BEAUTIFUL// 002

Monday, June 02, 2014

About 2 weeks ago I published my very first installment in this series. As I mentioned in my first post, I really want to share the blogs I love with you all. Blogging for me is partially about content and partially about how that content is presented. I am drawn to blogs that looks lovely. This week I want to share 3 great local blogs and 1 international blog with you guys. I read all four of these blogs frequently and hopefully you will too :-)

COME TO THE #CTMEETUP SO I KNOW IT'S REAL

#ctmeetup | 9th August 2014 | 13.30 - 15.00 | I Love My Laundry

I've joined forces with super mom Cindy Alfino to organise the next Cape Town Meet Up! We were so inspired (read: jealous) by the Jozi Meet Up we just had to jump on the bandwagon and do something here. After all, there are so many (I really mean that) awesome people I follow on Twitter that I would LOVE to meet in the real world.

LIFE DOESN'T FRIGHTEN ME

Thursday, May 29, 2014

Yesterday we all found out about Maya Angelou's passing. I've never blogged about a celebrity's death or the impact a celebrity has had on my life. When I read blog posts like that I always feel a little self righteous and usually tut away about sensationalist bloggers. I feel differently right now because as a young woman growing up I often felt lost in the world. I didn't know my place, I didn't know who I was or where I was supposed to be headed. It was a confusing time for me, and I found great comfort in Maya Angelou's books and poems. Those books are some of my most cherished possessions. As Sophie grows I hope to share these stories with her.

Today I ordered Maya Angelou's children's book 'Life Doesn't Frighten Me' which is beautifully illustrated by Jean-Michel Basquiat. Have a look:

SAYING SORRY ONLY COUNTS IF YOU MEAN IT, RIGHT?

Saturday, May 17, 2014

I find that sometimes we say sorry when what we actually mean is: sorry for the way what I said/did made you feel. I put a lot of stock in an apology, that’s probably why I seldom apologise for what I’ve said/done. If I meant it, I’d be the worst kind of hypocrite to take it back just because it offended or upset someone.

I was recently told that a someone close to our family took offense to something I had written in one of my posts. I had no idea that this person was even reading my blog and was truly surprised at the reaction (and subsequent fall out) I received. It really underscored what a personal journey blogging has been and continues to be for me. I’ve been writing this blog since 2008 and it’s taken on many forms since then, but what it’s always been is a very true reflection of where my life was/is at.

YOUR BLOG IS BEAUTIFUL // 001

Monday, May 12, 2014

I’ve written and rewritten this post so many times. I had this idea to share the blogs I am currently in love with so maybe you could fall in love with them too. The more I thought about how to lay it out, the more I realised I didn’t just want this to be a blogroll hiding out as a blog post. I didn’t just want to share what I was reading; I wanted to share why I loved what I was looking at too. You see, I am an incredibly visual person. I love beautiful design, from clothing to home ware to Sophie’s toys. It carries over to blogging. Yes I know, content is of course king, but a beautiful blog with exciting content? It’s a thing to behold. And that’s what I want to show you. Last night 2 great things happened: Natasha from Raising Men shared her redesigned site & Candice from Gorgeous Blog launched her new baby, a travel site called The Trip Fox. Both of these sites are visually divine, and looking at them I just knew this was the direction I was waiting for. This was where I wanted to take this blog series.

I DON'T WANT TO BE THAT MOM, BUT I KNOW IT'S UNAVOIDABLE

I just finished reading a wikiHow on introducing discipline to your toddler. I think it’s obvious that a desperate mother will accept any advice. You see, Sophie is a brat, I don’t want her to be one, but I know she is. I also know that the blame for this can be placed completely at our feet.

Since Sophie was born we have indulged her every whim. We’ve now reached this crucial stage of parenting, where I know she knows. She knows that if she pushes she will get her way. She knows that while I may reprimand her, if she giggles I will probably ease off, relent and accept defeat. She knows that her daddy has a spine made of jelly and is therefore completely incapable of standing up to her. She knows that she owns us. Well almost. I say almost because I am at the point now where I have been bitten, scratched, spat on, kicked, hit and had my hair pulled perhaps one too many times.

THE BODIES OF MOTHERS - JADE BEALL

Tuesday, May 06, 2014

Meet the mother who breastfed twins, who struggled with infertility, who had an unexpected c-section, who survived postpartum depression. Meet the mother who is still trying to love her body after having her babies.

Photographer Jade Beall celebrates all of these moms, and many more, in her new book The Bodies of Mothers. Eighty women in total bare their post-baby bodies – stretch marks, squishy bellies and all – within its pages in a brave and honest testament to the true beauty of motherhood.

Here is a look at some of her stunning portraits. Do you recognize yourself in any of them?

BEING A MOM MEANS FEELING GUILTY... 65% OF THE TIME

Friday, May 02, 2014

For someone that constantly talks about how important date nights are to new parents, I must admit Regan and I haven't had one this year. We've been caught up in this crazy whirlpool of work stress, life admin, a teething baby, a sick parent. This year started off in a sprint and it hasn't slowed down yet. On Wednesday night we had our first grown up night out for 2014.

Unsurprisingly, I spent most of the day in an excited bubble.

Yay for adult conversation!
Yay for drinks!
Yay for sitting in the impractically chilly backyard (something we'd not do with Sophie because it's outside in the evening - she'd get cold)!

FIRST BIRTHDAYS x AMAZING CAKES x HIP HIP HOORAY x BOOKS ARE GREAT GIFTS

Monday, April 28, 2014

When I read this post on the Raising Men blog I clearly remember feeling seriously excited about Sophie’s first birthday. If you scroll down to the comments you’ll see I even commented! What ever was I thinking? Children’s parties are a not for the faint hearted. As I write this I am still nursing a pounding headache that started when the last guest left last night (ahem the invite said 2-4pm).
