20 WAYS TO CELEBRATE WINTER

I love everything about winter.

There’s something about the chill in the air that makes me crave closeness. It fills me with a longing for lazy lunches with my extended family, cuddles on the couch with Regan, all day pajama days with my girls. For me, winter is family, it is food, it is life at a decadently slow pace, it is comfort and indulgence and I cannot fault a single thing about this fast approaching season.

When those icy Cape winds blow through the city, I feel like they bring a little magic with them. And while we may not live in the snow-kissed paradise of Scandinavia, there is much to celebrate about the colder months in the Cape. So if you don’t love winter as much as I do, perhaps 1 of the 20 activities below will change your mind.

1] MAKE BEOUF BOURGUIGNON
From May all the way up until October I start the week off by checking the weather. I am on the look out for cold and rainy days, extra points for wind. These days are earmarked for ABSOLUTE decadence and extreme comfort food. Beouf Bourguignon is a dish I only make in winter. I have spent years mastering the layers of flavor in this superb stew and every year it gets better and better. Serve it up with crusty bread or on a bed of fluffy mashed potatoes. I use the Julia Childs recipe, its perfect. But there are thousands on the internet that are less time consuming.

2] BUY A BIG WINE GLASS AND SOME FIRE WOOD
Winter, red wine and a roaring fire form the only love triangle I can really get behind. Save yourself some time this winter by getting an extra large wine glass.

3] TAKE A WALK DOWN GOVERNMENT AVENUE AND FEED THE SQUIRRELS
Maybe it’s the sounds of the city fighting to be heard over the quiet of the garden, maybe it’s the bare canopy of trees, maybe it’s the cobbled paving… whatever it is, a winter stroll through the Company’s Gardens is absolute magic. Bring the kids along and feed the squirrels for added fun.

4] PUMPKIN SPICE ERRRRTHANG
I feel like the whole pumpkin spice craze hasn’t quite landed in SA yet, but that doesn’t mean you can’t embrace it. Tryit out with these delish pumpkin spiced muffins.

5] GO PICK SOME APPLES
Apple picking in the Overberg is the ultimate winter activity. Don your chunky knits, wellies and scarfs and head on over to one of the many apple picking farms for a fun family outing. Here are afew farms to choose from.

6] EMBRACE DARKER NAIL POLISH
Say goodbye to pastels and pinks and hello to deep reds, plumy purples and rich browns. Winter nails are the best.

7] THROW ON A CHUNKY KNIT
Winter wear is probably one of the big reasons I love the season. Coats and knits and stockings make my soul happy. I’ve already laundered my jerseys in preparation for the first truly cold day.

8] BOOK A MINI BREAK
A trip to the country in winter is like a spa day for your soul. Great places to visit this winter are: Robertson, Greyton, McGregor, Swellendam and Darling.

9] JUMP IN A MUDDY PUDDLE
There’s little as adorable as watching Sophie jump her way across a street filled with puddles.

10] PACK A FLASK OF HOT CHOCCIE AND GO FOR A FOREST WALK
We’re so spoiled when it comes to experiencing beautiful, scenic nature walks in Cape Town. The forests show off so much winter with their bare leaves and misty floors. Put a flask hot chocolate together and head out for an early morning  trot in Newlands forest. You’ll thank me later.

11] CHRISTMAS BED AND MOVIE DAY
Probably one of my family’s dearest winter activities would be setting up a floor bed and snuggling into a movie marathon.

12] HOST A FEAST
Invite your friends or family over for a hearty Sunday lunch. Think roast leg of lamb or pork shoulder with all the trimmings. I can’t imagine anything better than a warm dining room, a table groaning under the weight of delicious food, the chatter of loved ones and the sound of driving rain. Perfection.

13] MAKE A PIE
Be it savoury or be it sweet, it’s sure to be a yummy treat.

14] VISIT THE PLANETARIUM
Perhaps on the same day as you take that stroll through the Company’s Gardens you could pop in for a quick show at the planetarium.

15] ENJOY A RAINY DAY CRAFTERNOON
Remember that Pinterest DIY board you created 3 years ago? Well a rainy Saturday afternoon is the perfect time to tackle one or two of those projects.

16] BAKE SOME GINGERBREAD COOKIES
The taste of gingerbread is so synonymous with Christmas, but it’s spicy, rich flavor is perfectly suited to winter snacking too.

17] TAKE A TRIP TO THE WINELANDS
Take a drive out to the winelands, enjoy a hearty lunch and a some decadent wine and just bask in the beauty of winter. The deep greens, the grey skies. Its everything. Here’s a list of eateries withfireplaces in the winelands.

18] GO TO THE BEACH
Yep you heard me, grab a latte and head over to Hout Bay beach and salute the winter sun.

19] HAVE BRUNCH AT THE NOORDHOEK FARM VILLAGE
I have this memory of one particular breakfast at Café Roux, it was raining hard outside, after no less than 3 near-death experiences coming over Ou Kaapseveg, I walked into the dark reception area of Café Roux and was immediately assaulted by the smell of superb food, the sounds of cutlery hungrily hitting crockery, the warmth of the fireplace and the undeniable sensation of home. It is a winter must. Aded bonus? They have an indoor play area.

20] ROUND UP YOUR OLD COATS AND CAPS AND GLOVES AND BLANKETS AND GIVE THEM TO SOMEONE IN NEED
As much as winter fills me with happiness, it also fills me with a deep sense of gratitude, we never feel as grateful for our homes as we do in winter. There are so many people in Cape Town that don’t get to experience the cozy, comfortable, indulgent winter I have just outlined. So if you have spare clothing, blankets and shoes, why not bag them up and donate them to one of the many charities in the city. We usually take our extras over to the Haven Night Shelter in our area.

Let me know if you give any of these wonderful activities a try!
