30 before 30: Getting old and making lists about it

Monday, October 07, 2013

It’s a gloomy Saturday afternoon in Cape Town and Regan and Sophie are both fast asleep. I’m sitting on my bed, blankly staring out the window thinking about the fact that in just a few months I’ll be 30. How did this happen? 20 feels like it was around the corner.

In the past 10 years I have fallen in love 3 times, lived on two different continents, travelled to over 11 different countries, had a baby and settled down comfortably into what I have always wanted my life to be.  I felt really inspired to do a 30 before 30 list, you know, a list of 30 things to do before I turn 30. Upon examining my failures and achievements thus far I have come to realise that I have actually done so much so far, I’m so blessed guys.

Even though I have done most of what I would put on my list I think I will go ahead and write it down anyway, there will be profound things and frivolous things and the ones already realised will be struck out.

  1. Go to Japan – I actually lived in Japan so I’m sticking this one out with a footnote to say that I would love to go back one day.
  2. Complete a #fmsphotoadaychallenge – October might be the month I do so.
  3. Lose enough weight to fit into the jeans I used to wear when I was 24 (yes I still have them). I only have 3 months to go till my birthday so I’m not sure how likely this is but I will give it my best shot.
  4. Go camping & enjoy it. Never had a successful camping trip that didn’t end in me sleeping in the car.
  5. Go bowling – something I’ve never done. Finish the colour on my back tattoo
  6. Get 1 more tattoo (am I brave enough for a half sleeve?)
  7. Have a baby – done and she is the single greatest achievement of my life.
  8. Get comfortable driving – this is a little secret of mine, but 15 years ago I was in a horrible bus accident. On our way back from a school trip to Cape Point our bus toppled over on the bottom of Ou Kaapse Weg and while no one died there were many serious injuries. Since then I have had such intense car anxiety. To put it simply I am not only the most nervous driver in the world, I am also the most annoying passenger.
  9. Wear a dress every day in the 30 days leading up to my birthday
  10. Re-open my vintage store (more on this at the end of the month)
  11. Go on a hot air balloon ride. This is a dream of mine.
  12. Visit Robben Island (also never been)
  13. Make a 7-course dinner for 7 people.
  14. Read Cry My Beloved Country again
  15. Go on a romantic mini-break with Regan and leave Sophie with my mom. (I don’t know if I am brave enough for this)
  16. Volunteer at the Sarah Fox home for children in Bridgetown.
  17. Do a full moon hike
  18. Travel to a town in South Africa I haven’t been to yet.
  19. Get dressed up and go see a show.
  20. Revamp a piece of old furniture
  21. Start or join a book club
  22. Find the perfect shade of red lipstick for my skin tone
  23. Download and complete the Couch to 5K running plan.
  24. Cook my way through a cook book
  25. Have professional family photos taken
  26. Take both my grans to High Tea at the Mount Nelson
  27. Donate blood
  28. Make one thing off my Pinterest DIY board
  29. Send 30 snail mail letters to 30 people.
  30. Embrace getting older!
I'll do my best to blog about any of the things on this list I manage to finish before turning 30 :)

Happy Monday!

    5. Go bowling. Have I ever told I'm pretty good at that shit?
    8. I've never been in an accident but still, I hate driving.
    10. Can't wait for your vintage store to reopen!
    11. Go on a hot air balloon ride. Ditto sister!
    12. Visit Robben Island. Could we do it together in January?
    13. Make a 7-course dinner for 7 people. Crazy bitch.
    30. Embrace getting older! Know what, after one month, you'll embrace being 30 and realize you're happy your twenties are behind you. It's actually quite refreshing starting a new decade.

I love comments!
